National Planning Policy Framework

Publication date:2012-04-29, Last updated:2013-03-12

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) was published in March 2012. It is the key document in the UK Government's reforms of the planning system in England. It aims to provide more accessible policy to protect the environment and promote sustainable growth in England. The document sets out the Government's requirements for the planning system, and provides a framework which must be taken into consideration in the preparation of local and neighbourhood plans. The Framework advocates a presumption in favour of sustainable development. This must be seen as a "golden thread" present in all plan-making and decision-making, and means that plans must support strategic development.
